British Columbia Veterans Commemorative Association (BCVCA), a not-for-profit organization, is the sole authorizing agent for B.C.’s Veteran Licence Plate Program on behalf of the B.C. government and ICBC.
Additionally they plan and implement commemorative events honouring the contributions of Canada’s military service members.
BCVCA contracted Applecross Design to create a visually compelling poster and supporting webpage to promote “The Triumph of Democracy Literary Contest.”
Aimed at British Columbia students in grades 7 through 12, the contest objective was to inspire youth to contemplate a world without War, and the importance and significance of democracy, freedom and Remembrance.
Project Requirements
Project Overview:
Russia’s illegal invasion of, and continued War with Ukraine, the largest European conflict since World War II, presented an opportunity to listen to the views of young people about War and peaceful co-existence throughout the world. A literary contest was devised, aimed at students across British Columbia, with an objective to inspire youth to contemplate their world without War and the significance of democracy, freedom and Remembrance. Posters and supporting online documentation were commissioned to promote the contest.
Design Considerations:

Design Approach
1. Engagement – Arrange visual elements to direct the viewer’s eye to textual content, while maximizing emotional impact.
2. Hierarchy & Readability – Consider the placement, size, and arrangement of elements to maximize visibility and clarity.
3. Visual Consistency – A “common thread” that ties all the posters and web page together, ensuring a unified look across different media.
4. Adaptability & Functionality – Adapt previously Applecross designed forms for application and guidelines documents
Overall, the approach balances aesthetics with functionality, ensuring that the designs are not only visually compelling but also serve their intended purpose effectively.
